It was observed at the request of Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia. As a child, Anna herd her mother say in a Sunday school lesson that she hoped there would some day be a special day for mothers. Their are many days for men, but nun for mothers" she said. After her mothers' death, Anna work hard to start a national holiday for all mothers.
