Dear Parent:

Welcome to the Magnet Biology Program at Hale Middle School. The 7th grade Biology curriculum is based on the new Common Core State Standards, which can be viewed here: http://www.cde.ca.gov/re/cc/

Course Description:
Biology utilizes a standards-aligned curriculum framework to encompass the essential concepts of biological science. Students will analyze and explain the nature of science in the search for understanding the natural world, as well as practice the application of technology, scientific tools, and critical thought skills in problem solving. Students will focus on the biological structures and their functions at multiple levels of organization in living things, as well as explore the patterns, processes, and systems within biology. As scientific learners, students will collect and analyze data, interpret results, draw conclusions, and communicate their findings. Throughout the course, students will work both independently and sometimes collaboratively, in a technology-based classroom with an active learner approach. The goal for the students is to gain a more meaningful understanding of the living world around them, as well as a deeper appreciation of their place in it.
Attendance Policy
Regular and prompt class attendance is an essential part of the educational experience. Hale M.S. expects students to exercise good judgment regarding attendance and absences. Students will accept full responsibility for missed assignments and will be given an opportunity to make up work for excused absences.

Classroom Expectations/Requirements:
1. Be on time for class
2. Be respectful to teachers and peers at ALL times
3. Be responsible for your learning by preparing for class and bringing all necessary materials to class
(Science Journal, pencils or pens)

Electronics Policy:
All electronics must be put away and out of use at all times in the classroom. Laptop computers will be an integral part of your child’s education and will be used frequently in my class. Parents, please familiarize yourselves with Schoology, as it will provide real time feedback on you child’s academic progress as well as track missing or incomplete work.

Plagiarism, Cheating, and Academic Integrity:
Plagiarism and cheating are considered serious offenses and will significantly affect your course grade, and in some cases, your graduation status. Please refer to the Student Code of Conduct booklet for additional information.

Homework Policy:
Homework is assigned regularly and all unfinished daily classwork automatically becomes homework.

Grading Scale:
100-90% = A, 89-80% = B, 69-60% = D, 59-0 FAIL.
 
Work Habits / Cooperation: Based on completion of assignments in a timely fashion. Grade is base on task behavior, participation and the level of appropriate social skills. If any student is tardy 3 times a U will be assigned.
 
 E – Excellent  S - Satisfactory  U - Unsatisfactory
