the water in the ocean circulates constantly around Earth books by surface winds and differences in temperature and salinity it follows fairly regular pads is water movements are called sea currents surface currents which tend to be warm are propelled by the prevailing winds which blow in a constant Direction on the surface of the ocean the Tradewinds the prevailing winds blowing near the equator give rise to a number of currents such as the South equatorial current this current flows northward is deflected off the American coast and becomes the Gulf Stream which crosses the North Atlantic deep currents are caused by contrasts in water temperature and salinity we can understand this phenomenon by looking at a virtual section of the Atlantic Ocean in the polar regions the water is colder and more say London at the equator which makes it denser the cold water therefore tends to sink under the warmer water and drop to the depths this phenomenon generates deep currents that move very slowly in a vast Loop through the oceans rising to the surface several centuries later
