Horticulture (Period 3rd)

Course Description

This class teaches students to plant seeds using cell pack containers and start them in the greenhouse. Then move small plants to outside raised planters/ or direct ground planting.  Raise plants until flowering and fruiting occur, harvest, take home or give to the food pantry.  We learn the names of the most commonly used garden tools and how to properly use them.  We learn the common names of plants and trees.  We study technics in pruning; shrubs, trees, and hedges.  We look at soil profiles and how to improve them using organic mulch.  We propagate plants by leaf and stem cuttings and start them off in the greenhouse.  We look at insects as pest or a benefit to the garden.  Students learn how to establish a small backyard home garden.
