Dear Parents, students and extended Hale family,

When we came back from winter break, my advisory students decided that they wanted to collect goods to donate to the West Valley Animal Shelter (inspired by the sad shelter commercials that play during the holidays).  We never started because Hale had so many other fundraising events going on.  As we near the end of the year, I want to honor the students wishes to try to make a difference in the life of our shelter animals.  I will be accepting anything that an animal can use, not money.  Things to be donated are old towels, and blankets, food, toys, treats etc.

The students were given a Reading Log to keep a record of minutes read each week.  Students are required to read 100 minutes a week.  The reading can be broken up any way that works for you.  For example 40 read on Monday means 60 left for the rest of the week.  Students can read 100 minutes on Saturday and Sunday if that works.  Reading can be done out of a textbook, novel, comic book, religious text etc.  I caution against reading on a computer screen due to the high glare and damage it can due.

No more RAKs or Reading Log! :)

Final Draft of the Malala letter is due.  This letter should be ready to be mailed with any decoration, stickers etc.

Students were given the rubric for the Poetry Book.  This is our final English project, it is worth eighty points.  No pencil, must have color and one picture per poem.

Period 1- Only ten students did the Random Act of Kindness.  These assignments are worth ten points each.  That will greatly damage a students current grade.  This is very disappointing.  Remember, the random act can be done during the week.

This will be the last week for Reading Log.  As we wind down, every minute counts, this is why some of the most recent weeks have not been checked.  Any weeks that have not been checked will be checked this week, and the unchecked weeks will not count negatively against your child's grade.

Period 4 ONLY- I noticed that I did not collect the Malala #2 sentences yet.  I will be collecting them tomorrow, Wednesday.  Please be sure to have them with you.

Students are working on their found poem.  They copied 10 sentences, that were chosen by their classmates, from the Malala book.  They must arrange those sentences into a poem, the order of their choosing.  The-y must choose one sentence that will repeat as the refrain of their poem.  This poem will be 12 sentences long.

*Some Updates:

Students will begin to take their CST test on Monday and it will go until Wednesday. This is computer based testing and should be SUPER FUN! ;)  Please make sure that your child is here every day, so that they do not have to do make-up testing.  Also, students will need a good night sleep, breakfast (even something small) and no rushing in the morning (maybe get clothes and books ready the night before).

 

I know we have taken a little break from our roots testing, so that we could work on Malala, but I have not forgotten that we need to do lists 6-10.  Please have your child begin to study, the roots will help with testing too!!  We will have our roots test 6-10 on May 15, two weeks from today.

I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU to all the parents, students, family and friends who helped to make our China Cultural Day go off without a hitch!  I truly appreciate all of the support, help and donations.  Between today and the "How To" presentations, we have been VERY well fed around here.

Today we learned Four Square Writing.  This is a very easy tool for writing.  Tonight, students must fill in a Four Square and write one paragraph about one of the topics left on the sheet, birds or drinks.  If the student decides to write both, I will award two extra credit points.  Keep it basic!

Reading Log is still required.  100 minutes checked on Friday.

Rules Poster is due. If you used your time wisely, most of the work was done in class.

A new book report assignment will be given on Monday, 11-10.  This assignment will be a Biography Book Report.  This must be a novel that was written by someone about a famous person.  Do not look up biographical information online, this is a BOOK report.

Biography Book Report. Students must READ (not do research on) a Biographical Book about anyone (alive or dead): movie star, president, sports hero.

They will complete the I am Poem (on the back of the handout given in class) and a poster, follow the instructions on the book report given in class.  The poem must be in the first person perspective, coming from the point of view of their chosen person.

The more creative the better!! I will give extra credit points to anyone who dresses as their character as well.

Book Report Due Monday!  Presentations will begin on the following Monday (12-15).  Make sure to have the novel with you when you present or it will be an automatic -5 points.

There is an ongoing problem in my classes this year of students losing assignment papers that are handed out, and then coming at the last minute to ask for a new one.  It is their responsibility to keep track of their upcoming assignments, handouts, papers to turn in, etc.  Please speak to them about this issue as it is ongoing and will begin to reflect in the students grades.

Just an FYI on the reading assignment for the upcoming week of Thanksgiving.  Students will bring home a copy of the Rules book (my book, not the schools).  The students will be responsible to read from page 75-144.  The students will sign out their copy on Thursday and sign it back in to me on Monday, Dec.1.  Any students who do not return the book, or return a copy that has been destroyed, will be responsible for replacing the novel.  If you would like to buy a copy so that your student can get ahead on this reading assignment, I will trade donated Rules books for prize tickets when we finish the novel.

Dear Hale Family,

Tomorrow, Thursday 11-20, there will be a rally at Monroe HS at 4:00pm in support of teachers, administrators, the clerical staff and the students of LAUSD.  This march is show the board members and the "new" superintendent of LAUSD that we are tired of being forced to take on more and more responsibility, work, and students than ever before with less and less materials and support.  The schools are so underfunded that my classroom is only swept one time a week, because our custodial staff is down to the bare bones.  This means that I must spend part of my day sweeping and cleaning the classroom, yet another role that we have been asked to take on.  Please come out to support your teachers, schools and yes, your students at the rally at Monroe High School on Thursday.  Friends, family and anyone who cares about the status of our education system is welcome and encouraged to attend, wear red and stand together in a show of support and solidarity.  Our future depends on our education.

Use the Treasure Hunt that we worked on in class to define the vocabulary using context clues, NOT a dictionary, internet or cell phones.  Using the sentence from the book, what does the word mean?

Find something to compare your difficulty to.

Today your child received their report card and their grade report.

The grade report lists everything that your child has done and what is missing. They have the opportunity to make-up any missing assignments and test between now and the 15 week report card. Please do all work and turn it in as a packet, not one page at a time. Packets should be turned in on or before Nov 5.  I will not accept any late work  after Nov 5.  The students copied directions on how to turn in late work and how to make-up tests.

Please note that the grade on the report card is from Wednesday last week and the grade on the grade sheet is from today, therefore the grade sheet is just a little more accurate and current. Remember, this is a progress report, not permanent.

Today, in class, we discussed a passage from Peter Pan about the map of your imaginary place.  Students are required to create a map of their imaginary place using the geography terms learned in history.  On a blank piece of printer paper (supplied in class) or your own, 8.5x11, please create a map of a place that does not exist.  Follow the directions on the paper provided in class.

Hello to my Hale friends and family extended community!

 

I am so excited to see everyone tomorrow night at Hale Charter Academy's Back-to-School night!  This is a great chance for you to get a little picture into your child's day at school. I hope they have been teaching you their hand signals! :)  The students brought home a handout with their class schedule and events that will be happening around campus, classrooms open at 6:30.  This is not an opportunity to talk about grades or behavior, but you will be able to schedule an appointment if you would like a conference.  I am also comfortable communicating via email if that is easier for you. 

I am still waiting to receive many parent emails, so I will use the Hale website as our main form of mass communication for now.  This is where I will post upcoming tests, fieldtrip information, activities, events and other interesting information. You will also find links for the Hale Traveler's upcoming trips, Italy 2016 and recently added, Spain in 2017 (by planning so far in advance we are able to keep the monthly payment as low as possible).
