English 8: Honors (Period 5) Assignments

The final draft of your essay is due Thursday the 14th. If you choose to type your essay, it must be typed in 12 pt. font, be double-spaced, and have 1" margins. All essays must have rough drafts and sources attached.

The rough draft of your essay is due Monday and will be checked as a homework grade. Remember, filling out the graphic organizer is NOT a substitute for a rough draft.

Please bring your two sources to class on Thursday, and be prepared to start mapping out your argument using the graphic organizer on the essay handout below. If your source(s) cannot be brought in, be sure you are familiar enough with the material that you can use it to construct your argument. (Meaning, read the article carefully, watch the video all the way to the end, etc.)

PARENTS: If your child needs or wants some summer enrichment, CSUN has a fantastic, well-respected program: http://www.csun.edu/eisner-education/summer-academic-enrichment-program Many of these classes can be used to satisfy high school requirements, including the UC System's "A-G" requirements, but check first with the high school your child will attend.

Your Facebook profile page for a character in Anne Frank is due tomorrow. You may either use the paper version I passed out in class, or you may use the Google Docs template linked below.

2. Hover over the top, and a black bar should appear with a few options. Click on "Open With" and select "Google Slides." It will also work if you open it with Microsoft PowerPoint. If you don't see the "Open With" option, log in with your Google account, and then you'll see it.

3. Once it loads up, click on whatever you would like to edit, and you should be able to change whatever you like.

 

For the purpose of the assignment, please fill out the profile page (the first one of the 3 that load up as part of the template) and print it out. You may do more pages than just the first one, but the first one is required.

On Friday the 17th, you will have a test on the easily confused words we've been working on since last week. Please download the attached study guide for the list of words and more details.

You must be up to page 153 in Anne Frank by Thursday the 16th.

PARENTS: Students should have received a high school programming packet from El Camino High School if they indicated that they're likely to attend ECR. In addition, I distributed a copy of the UC System's "a-g" requirements. Please review the packet with your child and talk with them about choosing classes, meeting graduation and admission requirements, etc. The ECR counselors will be at Hale on the 15th and 16th, so the packets should be filled out before the 15th.

If you have questions or you have difficulty helping your child, please have your child ask me or Mrs. McKenzie, or have them keep a list of questions they'll need to ask their high school counselor. Encourage your child to advocate for him or herself and to be assertive in getting their questions answered!

Please read up to and including page 102 in Anne Frank by Friday the 10th. (extended one day)

Please finish your work on word pairs below. Remember the key questions you need to be able to answer for each pair: What's the difference between the two? When do you use each one?

 

Word Pairs:

On Thursday, 3/26, there will be a reading check on pages 1-75 of Anne Frank. Please be familiar with the characters and basic events of the diary.

Because we have been testing, all of our Anne Frank assignments will not be due until Thursday, 3/19. That means you have lots of time to make sure everything is complete and represents you best effort. Here's what should be done by Thursday:

Your room tour and diagram are due Wednesday, 3/18. Your room tour should have the following format:

Please read up to page 52 of Anne Frank by March 11th.

Please bring a plastic (or other waterproof material) bag to class tomorrow so you will be able to protect your copy of Anne Frank.

On Friday the 27th, you will have a Five-A-Day Test. It will be open-note, and it will be exactly like the Five-A-Days we do in class, but you will do it independently and it will be graded. (20 points)

Honors classes need to have read up to page 179 by Wednesday the 11th. The reading log is due the same day.

Grade sheets were distributed to all students in Periods 3, 4, 5, and 6. Parent signatures on grade sheets are due tomorrow.

Please study for the vocabulary and word root quiz on Friday the 6th. This weeks' word roots: cept, ject, ceit/ceive, rupt, flect/flex, fract/frag.

Honors classes should read up to page 140 by Wednesday the 4th.

 

Personal Response Question: Although it would be easy to hate Christopher's mother, how do you think the author encourages us to be sympathetic to her? Use TWO specific examples and explain how each one creates sympathy.

You have a vocabulary quiz on Friday the 30th. You will need to know this week's six roots (gest, port, miss, form, struct, migr) as well as the twenty words on both sides of the vocabulary worksheet.

Please be sure to have read up to page 90 in The Curious Incident by Wednesday the 28th. Your Reading Log is also due Wednesday.

Here is the Personal Response Question for this week: By page 90, you should have an opinion on what kind of person and father Ed Boone (Christopher’s dad) is. Please complete the sentence below and use it as the claim (topic sentence) of a “perfect paragraph” about Mr. Boone. Be sure to use two specific examples from the text, and provide commentary on those examples in your paragraph.

Your answer should be about a paragraph long and should use an example from the novel (preferable) or your own life to support your point.

On Friday the 16th, we will have a vocabulary quiz on the 20 words on your worksheet as well as these 6 roots: bene, mal, dys, geo, aer, and pyro.

Your permission slip for The Curious Incident is due on Wednesday. You will not receive a book until the permission slip is returned, and we will move on without you, so please make sure you return this promptly!

Please complete both sides of the vocabulary worksheet(s). Period 1, you do not need to do Part D. (Periods 3-6, you did not receive Part D, so don't worry!)

We will have a punctuation test on Friday. Topics covered: semicolons, colons, hyphens, dashes, and parentheses.

Please finish your punctuation paragraph, and your explanations of each mark you used. You must use at least one colon, semicolon, hyphen, dash (best used in pairs) and parentheses.

Please finish your "equality chart" that we started in class. Try to come up with at least five similarities between Flowers for Algernon and the Greek story. Below, you will find a link to the Prometheus/Pandora story distributed in class.

Parents, all Honors classes had their essays returned to them. Your child should be able to show you the essay and the code sheet.

 

Students, please have finished Flowers for Algernon by Monday.

If necessary, please finish the vocabulary worksheet handed out in class.

ALL students received grade sheets that reflect their 15-week grades in English, and ALL students (no matter the grade) need to have a parent sign the grade sheet. This is a 5-point homework assignment.

Please finish the punctuation worksheet distributed in class.

The 5-A-Day sheet passed out on Tuesday is due on Thursday, 10/30. Please TRY every problem, but it's OK if you get stuck and need to skip something. We will go over it in class on Thursday and answer all of your questions. :-)

Don't forget to bring markers and any other supplies you might need for your group project! (Parents, this is a project that will be done entirely in class.)

Please finish summarizing ONE of the articles for homework. Due tomorrow, 10/28. Maximum 150 words.

On Wednesday, the Forge essay assignment was distributed. This will be done almost entirely in class, but you will find the prompts attached for your reference. No final due date has yet been set, but there will be incremental due dates.

By Thursday, 10/16, you need to have selected which topic you will write about. Please continue to bring your novel to class every day as you will need it while you write.

Quiz on pages 148-end of Forge will be on Tuesday, 10/14.

On Monday 10/13, all classes will take their first quarterly Mountain Language test. The test is open-notes, so if you have been keeping your Mountain Language notebook up to date, you should be fine. Topics covered: #1 (types of nouns), #2 (possessive apostrophes), #3 (active and passive voice), #4 (choosing the correct verb tense), #5 (turning fragments or run-ons into complete sentences), #9 (homophones), #11 (pronouns), #14 (combing sentences with appositives), and #19 (fixing common errors).

On Friday, we will practice Mountain Language and work on these skills so you will know what to expect.

ALL Honors classes received grade sheets today showing their 10-week grades. All students, no matter what their grade is, must get their grade sheet signed by a parent. This counts as a homework assignment!

The Forge artifact assignment was passed out today and is due tomorrow.

The Forge reading schedule with due dates and questions can be found below. Please open the attachment for individual weekly due dates. 

Please finish the practice sheet on subject and object pronouns. It's the small white one we stapled into our Mountain Language notebooks. Don't forget to "flip" # 11, 14, and 20 in Exercise A: change the active sentences to passive voice, and vice versa. Circle the pronouns in your flipped sentences. Do you see a pattern?

Please finish the Possessive Nouns practice worksheet (the one with the number 128 in the corner) you stapled into your Mountain Language notebook.

On Monday, please bring to class your Mountain Language notebook and your packs of Post-Its.

Please finish setting up Page 2 of your Mountain Language notebook. You need to number and title the page, and glue or tape down the blue foldable with the flaps. (Make sure you don't accidentally glue down the flaps.) That's it!

Please finish your summer reading assignment (handed out in class today). Due tomorrow, 8/20.

Please bring your blank composition book to class tomorrow with a stapler, tape, or a glue stick.

Today we reviewed Perfect Paragraph structure. Please finish the paragraph you started in class, and color-code it the same way we did the Cinderella paragraph. Tomorrow, we will write about your summer reading book.
