Course Description

Welcome!

ELD stands for English Language Development. When a child is enrolled in LA Unified schools, parents complete an enrollment form indicating what language is spoken at home. Students are designated an English learner if another language other than English is spoken in their home. In an English Language Development program, students get additional support based on their current English speaking abilities. We determine a student's language proficiency through the annual district mandated testing. This testing measures a students current English abilities in the five major areas such as Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. The two tests are called the CELDT (California English Language Development Test) and the RI (Reading Inventory).
